Narrative career counseling represents a shift from the 20th century focus on objective interventions for career decision making toward a 21st century concern for interpretive approaches it is sited in postmodern developments where previous grand theories overemphasize either social structures eg marxism or individual psychology eg psychoanalysis. Narrative approach to career counseling clients narrate or tell about their past career development present career development and construct their future career this is an active approach that attends to how clients intentionally interact with the world and learn about it through these interactions. This article addresses the issues of career counseling and career based satisfaction it is argued that taking a narrative approach to career counseling is both theoretically and practically justified the article explores narrative theory in relation to career counseling and identity and illustrates the central notions that arise from the theory with a brief case study.
